Oral surgery
Oral Surgery is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on surgical procedures and diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases and injuries in the mouth (oral) region.
This branch of dentistry is performed by oral surgeons who have gained and underlying knowledge in the field of general dentistry. A specialization in oral surgery requires additional years of education in the fields of anesthesiology and surgery, completed in hospitals and various specialized institutions.
Surgical procedures in the mouth include:
- implant placement
- bone augmentation (bone formation) in areas with insufficient bone for dental implants
- sinus lifts in areas of the maxilla (upper jaw) where there in insufficient bone height
- extraction of wisdom teeth (third molar)
- apicoectomy of the root-end of teeth with periapical cysts or granulomas
- cystectomy involves removing large and small cysts in the upper jaw, lower jaw (maxilla and madibule) and sinuses
- correction of bone defects of the alveolar ridge
An oral surgeon performs various surgical procedures which include implant placement. One of the most important and demanding procedures is periodontal plastic surgery (shaping) of the soft tissue (gums) and acheiving surperior aesthetic results around dental implants.
Increasing gum tissue may be needed to achieve the most natural appearance of dental implants. The procedure is performed using by various surgical procedures, i.e taking a gum tissue graft from the palate and attaching it to the implant site.
Oral surgery implies the restoration of the functional and aesthetic aspect of oral health.
