During the holidays we all relax from everyday tasks, so we may also put aside our oral hygiene. If that’s the case with you, the end of summer is the right time to take care of your oral health again and visit your dentist for a  dental examination!

Appropriate oral hygiene is very important for your oral health. Only regular and proper maintenance of oral hygiene can achieve satisfactory plaque control and prevent plaque-induced diseases: tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontitis. With good hygiene of the oral cavity, we remove plaque and consequently  micro-organisms found in the oral cavity.

Brushing teeth with a toothbrush is the main but not the only way to remove plaque. Fiber brushes can not reach interdental areas, and therefore we need other aids, such as dental floss and interdental brushes. We recommend a soft brush with flexible fibers. Teeth should be brushed by rotating movements of the toothbrush, not too firmly as to avoid soft tissue injuries.

It is similar with interdental spaces, which are often ignored. During the examination, a dentist will determine what type of oral hygiene is most suitable for you. By measuring inerdental spaces, a dentist will tell you what size of interdental brushes to use. It can neither be too large nor too small to adequately clean those spaces. Interdental spaces may vary in size and will require different dimensions of interdental brushes. When starting to use any dental floss or splinters, slight gingival bleeding may occur. The gingiva has been inflamed due to prolonged food retention and bacterial accumulation. Regular oral hygiene will remove the cause and stop the bleeding.

Various antiseptic rinsing liquids can be used as additional help. Today, there are also electric toothbrushes that use rotating heads to make brushing easier, or ultrasound brushes to use ultrasonic technology to break down the deposits in the oral cavity. There are also various waterpik that replace interdental brushes in maintaining hygiene of the interdental spaces. With all these options, there is no room for excuses. Therefore, arrange your check up today, consult what is best for you and enjoy your beautiful smile.
